Response to Chuka Umunna MP: A statement from Save Skating in Streatham

30/09/10 'The Save Skating in Streatham group, comprised of local ice users, residents, politicians and local businesses, notes the request by Chuka Umunna, MP for Streatham, that we "compromise" over the proposal by Tesco and Lambeth Council to build a temporary ice rink on the site of Pope's Road multi-story car park, which is Brixton's only public car park. We also note that united with us in opposition to this hopelessly ill-thought-out scheme is Brixton Market Traders' Federation, indoor market traders, shopkeepers large and small (Association of Brixton Arcades and Shopkeepers), local community groups (Brixton Society, ABC Brixton, Options4Change), and the wider market shopping community (Friends of Brixton Market). We further note that, following intervention from then Mayor Ken Livingstone in December 2004, a compromise agreement was reached, and finally signed between the community and Tesco in December 2008 when Britain's biggest supermarket agreed to build the new rink before demolishing the old one. There will be no more compromises from us or the people of Streatham and Brixton, who are united on this issue.'
