But that's exactly what happened last Friday (25 November), when a large number of people turned up at St Leonard's church to give their views on the Boundary Commission's plans to split Streatham between three different constituencies.

Apart from a few people from outside the area saying they didn't want to be part Streatham (and, as far as I could see, no one was inviting them to join us anyway), most people there (including councillors from the two opposing parties which represent Streatham wards) came to give a range of reasons why the town needs a single MP.

For me, Streatham needs a strong leader for this very mixed area. It is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse areas in London, as well as being one where there are (regardless of ethnic background) vast differences in wealth. Streatham has long been the home of several minority ethnic communities, and in recent years we have seen rapid change as a wider range of groups have moved into the area. Although Streatham is not strictly divided by ethnic background or social class as are some other parts of the country, more needs to be done to bring communities together.

Anyone who believes that Streatham needs its own MP (from whichever party) to speak to and for all parts of the community should try to find the time this weekend to put their view to the Boundary Commission before its consultation deadline on Monday (5 December).
